Bushfallers

The expression “Bush-faller” is of Cameroonian coinage and denotes one who has gone to seek his/her fortune away from home, like the hunters of old used to go away for days at a time in search of game. In present day parlance, the word has acquired several connotations, depending on who is saying it, where they are saying it and whom they are saying it to.

Whether said in jest, in mockery, in pride or praise, there’s no escaping the fact that the Bushfallers have had a profound effect on Cameroonian society. They have moved thousands of families out of poverty, transformed the economies of entire communities with their remittances (as well as the country’s foreign exchange earnings) and deeply affected the culture with infusion of foreign experiences.

Many Bushfallers have failed in their quest but most have succeeded and all have had an impact on the lives of their loved ones and their communities. This is more than can be said for many of those who could not, or did want to, leave the confines of our national triangle.

This slot is an open forum for those who have a story to tell about their experiences abroad or those of their friends and family members.
