Cameroonian Film Shortlisted For International Award

By Yerima Kini Nsom
— A Cameroonian Film known as ASONI, directed by Sylvester Keka, has been shortlisted for the Africa Movie Academy Award, AMAA. The award ceremony will take place in Lagos, Nigeria, on April 22.

AMAA’s College of Screeners nominated ASONI in the category of “Best Film in an Africa language, in Banjul, Gambia recently. While disclosing the information to The Post on phone, AMAA’s representative for Francophone Africa, Akong Nwatum, regretted that Cameroon did not put up a spectacular performance in 2012 as compared to last year.

He however, stated that even though “Cameroon is two films down from the three nominations in 2011; I believe that the country’s movie industry is growing steadily. It should be noted that this year’s AMAA, judging from the films the College of Screeners received, was highly contested. Getting a nomination is worth celebrating”, Akong remarked.

Last year, a Cameroonian film produced by Ariane Astrid Atodji was selected as one of the best during the AMAA film festival that took place in Yengoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. AMAA, that was created by its current Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Peace Anyiam-Fibersima, aims at promoting excellence in the African movie industry.

In the AMAA 2012 achievement in cinematography, South African, Kenyan, Ghanaian and Nigerian films were nominated. In all, South African, Nigerian, Ghanaian films, amongst others, dominate the list of those nominated in the various categories.
