ELECAM Seeks To Organise Freer, Fairer Elections

By Elizabeth Enanga Mokake — ELECAM, together with an International Organisation, known by its French appellation,  Groupe D’Appui au Processus Electoral, GAPE, aim to seek ways on improving the organisation of elections in the country.

The officials of both outfits met on January 17 at the Yaounde Mont Febe Hotel during an evaluation meeting of the September 30, 2013 Legislative and Municipal elections. At the occasion, ELECAM Chairman, Dr. Fonkam Azu’u, said the meeting was aimed at taking stock of what happened during the twin elections. Fonkam Azu’u said the first challenge of the elections was to make sure that all the voting materials were in place.

He said one of the major goals of ELECAM is to educate Cameroonians, especially the youth and marginalised people, on the importance of voting. The UNDP Resident Representative and Coordinator of the United Nations System in Cameroon, Najat Rochdi, said, “This is the moment for us to see if there were any lapses during the elections, so that together we can improve on it.”
