Health Officials, Journalists Partner Against Cholera

By Jeff Ngawe Yufenyu

Northwest Public Health Delegate, Dr. Victor Ndiforchu, has solicited the collaboration of journalists in the fight against cholera in the Region where the epidemic was recently registered. The disease has killed about eight people in the different health districts of the Northwest, with Bafut health district being hardest hit.

To stem the epidemic, the Northwest Public Health Delegation, in collaboration with PLAN Cameroon, organised a training workshop recently with media practitioners, with the objective of developing messages on cholera control for radio diffusion. Journalists were drilled on various topics, including facts about cholera, the importance of the media in preventing the spread of cholera and preparation of oral rehydration solution, amongst others.

Participants crafted messages on facts about cholera, prevention messages and messages on what to do in the face of a suspected case etc. The Northwest Regional Coordinator for PLAN Cameroon, Valentine Manah, said his organisation was doing its best to assist in the fight against the spread of cholera.

On his part, the Public Health Regional Delegate described journalists as true partners in the fight against the spread of cholera in the Northwest Region. He called on the population to respect personal and environmental hygiene as their own contribution in the global fight against the spread of cholera.
