NCC To Meet Media Professionals In Douala, Buea

By Basil K. Mbuye

CameroonPostline.com — The President of the National Communication Council, NCC, Joseph Befe Ateba, will pay a working visit to Douala and Buea, from June 17 – 23. According to a press release signed by the Secretary General, Dr. Jean-Tobie Hond, the visit is the continuation of the sensitisation campaign that started in Yaounde on September 13, 2012. It is also to apprise media professionals of the work done so far by the NCC, since its reorganisation on January 23, 2012.

“The importance of this crusade resides in the necessity to explain the approach elected by the NCC, to effectively follow its regulatory mission and make media professionals understand the constraints of the NCC, in order that they might not see its actions as punitive.

The NCC is rather an organ that prefers an educative and concerting approach, in a bid to achieve professional and responsible communication,” the press release reads in part. The campaign will be carried out in all the 10 regions of the country. The NCC, in line with the provisions of the Decree of January 22, 2012, aims at promoting freedom of the press, peace and social order in the media and the practicability of media structures.

It will also sensitise media professionals on its operations, especially on how they treat complaints and requests it receives. The visit of the NCC President to Douala and Buea is coming just shortly after President Paul Biya issued an order, calling on the various stakeholders to cleanse Cameroon’s media landscape, so as to provide social protection to all media professionals.

It should be noted that The President of the Republic, signed three Presidential Decrees on February 22, 2013, appointing nine new members of the NCC, to regulate the media landscape in the country.
