Ndop Health District Declared Cholera Epidemic Zone

By Jeff Ngawe Yufenyu

The District Medical Officer, DMO, for Ndop Health District, Dr. Emmanuel Bambo Ngala, has declared the district a cholera epidemic zone. The DMO made the declaration in a one-page document addressed to the Senior Divisional Officer, SDO, for Ngoketunjia Division dated May 24.

According to Dr. Bambio Ngala, he declared Ndop Health District an epidemic zone as a result of the presence of one positive case of cholera received at the District Hospital recently.

In a chat with The Post in Ndop on May 26, Dr. Bambo said the presence of just one positive case of cholera in any area is enough ground for the zone to be declared high risk, due to the rapidity in which the disease can spread. The Medical Officer, however, assured the public that after stringent measures were taken, so far no new suspected cases have been registered in the health district.

When this reporter visited the hospital to assess the state of the lone cholera case, the victim who hails from Mbissa Island in Bambalang, had reportedly gone out to take a bath. Two men and a woman who were sitting by the victim’s bed assured this reporter that their patient was fast responding to treatment.

Meanwhile, the general state of affairs in Ndop is the fear of the spread of the disease especially as cases of deaths have been reported elsewhere in the Northwest Region.
Dr. Bambo Ngala advised the population to drink safe water or boiled water, wash hands thoroughly with soap after using the toilet and to wash all fruits well with running water before consumption.
