Sylvester Gwellem Is Dead

By Peterkins Manyong

Sylvester Anchang Gwellem, veteran journalist, is no more. He died at the Bamenda Regional Hospital on Saturday, June 4. Gwellem’s mortal remains will be removed from the Bamenda Regional Hospital mortuary on Saturday, June 18, and burial will take place same day at his native Bobong Village in Njinikom.

Choves Loh, Northwest Chief of Cameroon Tribune, who was with him an hour before he died, said Gwellem was quite conscious that he had come to the end of his earthly journey and made this known to all those present, including his wife, Grace Gwellem. "Choves, I am happy you have come. My time is up. Remember what I told you," Choves quoted late Gwellem as saying.

Late Gwellem had been diabetic and hypertensive for 22 years, according to his wife. She said Gwellem was a very disciplined man and followed his doctor’s prescription to the letter, reason why he was able to last that long.

Before his death, Gwellem was the First Deputy Mayor of the SDF-run Njinikom Council. He was co-opted into the secretariat of SDF’s National Executive Committee, NEC, shortly before he died. Late Gwellem was brilliant in his expositions and a great upholder of sound journalistic principles. He leaves behind his wife, five children and numerous friends and well-wishers to mourn him.
