Teacher Drowns In

By Maxcel Fokwen
Thirty-three-year-old Alphonse Fozong, a teacher of Government School Ebie, Muyuka Subdivision, Southwest Region on July 15 drowned in a stream in Kumba known as “Kumba Wata”.
Eye witness accounts hold that the incident occurred around 11.00pm after Fozong left Fiango on his motorbike heading for Mabonji village in the outskirts of Kumba. The eyewitnesses said Fozong rode off-track, bashed himself against the metal bars on the bridge and fell into the stream.
A bike rider who claimed to have witnessed the incident said he and other riders immediately rushed to the riverside but could not find Fozong who they thought was a commercial motorbike rider. However, his bike was pulled out of the stream.
The search for the body of the deceased continued till midday, July 16, but no trace of him could be found.
Later in the early hours of July 17, the corpse was surprisingly retrieved faraway down stream by a diver popularly known in Kumba as Victor Whiteman. Fresh blood was still oozing out of his nostrils.
Victor Whiteman, who is a foreigner, is said to have spent over three decades in Kumba retrieving bodies of people who drown.
After proper identification of the drowned man carried out by a team of medical and judiciary officials, the body was transported to their family compound in Mabonji.
The Post gathered that a preacher who was invited to pray for the peaceful repose of the deceased was asked to leave when he claimed that Fozong’s death was caused by one of his family members. The deceased’s father is said to have later requested for a catechist, rather than a pastor or priest, to carry out the ritual.
