Yaounde Municipal Lake Drained For Tourism

By Claudia Soh* — Government has begun draining the Yaounde Municipal Lake, which The Post learnt will soon become a tourist site.

The engineer undertaking the drainage of the lake, Philippe Arnauld Ndzana, told The Post that, “Government plans to transform the lake into a tourist site.” Some fishermen have, however, protested the draining because it has left them jobless, since the lake was their source of income. While some grieved for loss of job, others said they are happy because, according to them, the lake had become a shortcut for those who were tired of living.

Last year, three dead bodies were found in the lake; some suicide cases and other unexplained cases. The rate of deaths in the lake had begun raising eyebrows, reason why rumours circulating hold that this is Government’s way of preventing any further suicide attempts in the lake.

Youande dwellers are anxious to see what becomes of the lake although according to Ndzana Arnauld,” there is no precise prospect concerning the dry land”.
